This is a 2-day trip to Athens, OH. We will depart from Hazard with optional pick-up sites en-route to Athens.
Green Edge Gardens is an operation in Appalachian Ohio that has developed an in-depth curriculum for all growers from beginners to advanced to extend their growing season in a climate and terrain similar to Eastern Kentucky’s.
Through their extensive practice of utilizing their greenhouses and grow rooms, Green Edge is able to ensure a year-round selection of seasonal vegetables, micro greens, and specialty mushrooms, which they sell to wholesale and retail customers. Because of their 12-month/year agrarian system, they are able to provide full-time, part-time, and seasonal jobs, verifying that their sustainable practices promote economic development through agriculture.
This event is pay-what-you-can. The suggested payment is $30. All payments will cover:
- Tour of ACEnet
- Full-day season extensionworkshop at Green Edge Gardens
- All meals during the field trip
- Lodging (you may be paired with a roommate)
- 1-year membership with CFA (a total value of $208).
There is a 40 person limit to the trip, so register as soon as you can!
Deadline for registration is November 30, 2016. Any late registrations will not be guaranteed a hotel room.
Reviews from last field trip
“I can’t even say how valuable this trip was for me. I’ve made useful contacts with other growers, and I really needed to see high tunnels in use in the winter time to really understand how much I could benefit from this way of growing. The trip was extremely well-planned, communicated, and executed. Thank you so much for all of your work in making this happen”
“THANK YOU SO MUCH for putting this trip together! It was a wonderful trip. I saw a lot of things I will implement of my own farm, and I had a bunch of fun as well. An excellent and super affordable trip”
CFA has partnered with Green Edge Gardens, ACEnet, and Rural Action through a Rural Community Development Initiative grant to make this opportunity possible.
