The fact is, this country needs new farmers.
More farmers are retiring each day than are beginning. Kentucky is at a crossroads with farms that once supported tobacco are now wondering how to generate income. With the landowner aging, many do not have children to take over and grow the family business. Many landowners, even though they would like to see their land farmed, decide to sell and their land is at risk of going out of agricultural production.
At the same time, there are beginning farmers who need land. Access to land is perhaps the biggest barrier for beginning farmers. The Ag Legacy Initiative is about securing the next generation of farmers and so we are working on developing the Kentucky Land Link Program which will connect landowners with farmers.
